How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump
